How Much Energy Will I Really Save with New Windows?

So you’re skeptical of what you’ll save with energy efficient windows. We see it all the time. It’s not our job to bully you into buying; we just want to give you the facts so you can make your own decision.

What affects energy savings in a home?

There are a million-and-one ways that energy sneaks out of your home only to show up on your bill at the end of the month. And there are an equal number of things you can do to make your home more energy-friendly.

A short list of places to look includes: the thickness of your walls, your insulation, HVAC systems, holes in your roof, and the seals on your doors.  We take care of windows and doors, which are serious zones for energy loss.

How would new windows save me energy?

You will receive the largest benefit from new windows if you’re upgrading from old or low quality windows. There’s a light year of difference between an old single pane window and a double- or triple-pane, argon-filled, low-E coated window.

This chart shows you the dollar amount of savings you could expect depending on what kind of windows you’re switching from.

Well-sealed, insulating new windows make it much more difficult for air to escape from your home. This means your heating and cooling systems will run much more efficiently, since the air they’re pumping out isn’t being dissipated to the outside as quickly as with old, cheaper windows.

Can I get a tax break for installing eco-friendly windows?

Yes. For the year of 2016, you can apply for a tax credit on windows that are Energy Star-rated by the government. Being Energy Star-rated means that a window meets certain standards for energy efficiency that are set by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency. You can read more about it here.

How do I know which windows are energy-friendly?

Every window sold by major window companies, including The Window Source, must first be rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). The NFRC gives each window four numbers by which you can measure its efficiency.

You can read the key to understanding these four numbers here. Once you know the key, it is easy to tell which windows are efficient enough to do a good job in your climate.
